Weight loss is something that is difficult for anyone, and when a person is a teenager, it can be incredibly hard. Between bullying, self-doubt, and sometimes depression, teens may not know how to begin a better exercise or diet plan and may feel embarrassed reaching out for help. Here at Rites of Passage NW, we have a summer weight loss camp for teens in North America – USA to help kids develop better eating habits and to lose weight. The goal is to also keep those better habits well after they are discharged from our program.
Here at our summer camp, we try to no be a traditional “fat camp.” Teens will eat a holistic diet eating only healthy foods. It may take some time to get used to, but our teens love the end result of looking and feeling better. We also teach teens how to meal plan and count calories, and that a diet is not a system of punishment.
Exercise is also a big focal point here at our summer camp. Instead of traditional exercise such as a gym treadmill, teens will participate in wilderness treks and hiking adventures, and learn that exercise can be fun and rewarding. Our hikes get teens back to nature, and we have found this is a great way to redirect the energy.
Individual and group therapy counseling is also part of our program. We want to address co-occurring issues with weight loss, such as anxiety and depression, in addition to reasons for the weight gain in the first place.
