Teenagers can often be brutal, and when a fellow teen is overweight, they can often be the target of bullying and harassment in school, and even other places. It can be hard enough being a teen without having to deal with that kind of torture. Kids who are obese or overweight may not know where to turn for help, and they may even be embarrassed to ask. Here at Rites of Passage NW, we have a summer weight loss camp for kids in Washington that not only teaches them better habits, but helps keep the weight off, even after being discharged from our program.
There are several component to our summer camp, which we do not consider to be a “traditional fat camp.” We offer only holistic, natural food choices to our teens, and while it may take some time for them to get used to it, looking and feeling better is a terrific reward. We also teach teens how to meal plan and count calories for continued success.
Exercise is also a big part of our program. Instead of the conventional gym membership, we offer our teens exercise in the wilderness. Between trekking, hiking, and swimming, our teens get a unique experience and discover that exercise can be both fun and rewarding.
We also integrate both group and individual therapy as part of our camp. We believe that by getting to the root of the problem of obesity, teens can learn to live a happier and healthier life. We also help teens suffering from problems such as anxiety and depression.
