For those teens that are overweight, bullying can be a nightmare. It can be excruciating to go to school every day, not quite sure how to deal with name-calling, but also not sure how to lose the weight and become healthier. A new diet and exercise program can be tough to start. Even with the support of parents, it can be very difficult to know where to begin. Here at Rites of Passage NW, we have a weight loss camp for teens in North America – USA that helps teens learn how to make healthier choices, not just for the duration of the camp, but for the rest of their lives.
With our completely holistic diet, teens will learn how to count calories, and to eat a balanced diet of fruits and vegetables. With new knowledge about diet and exercise, teens will be able to take all of their new habits and practices home with them to continue making better choices. We are different than a traditional “fat camp,” as we combine therapy with better eating practices and exercise.
Exercise to teens may sound like the drudgery of going to the gym several times a week. Here at Rites of Passage NW, we show them that exercise can be outdoors as well, with our nature treks and hikes. Teens will gradually build up their stamina to be able to take part in moderate to difficult hikes, and will learn how to camp and survive in the wilderness.
Along with diet and exercise changes, we offer group and individual therapy while here. It is important to combat the problems that go hand in hand with obesity, such as anxiety and depression.
