Wilderness Therapy Programs for those in the U.S. or the International Community

Camps for Troubled Young Adults in the USA
The number of people across the United States and the world for that matter, silently suffering from the effects of various mental or emotional illnesses is staggering. While the understanding of the importance of treating these afflictions is slowly improving in North America, the stigma attached to these ailments here and internationally still keep some from seeking help. If not treated, these mental issues can manifest into the development of negative behaviors such as over eating, drinking alcohol to excess or using drugs in an attempt to deal with these problems. It is these behaviors that treatment is often sought out for but just treating those behaviors doesn't solve the underlying emotional concerns. Whether in the U.S. or from the International community, wilderness therapy programs will treat the whole individual.

Wilderness Therapy Programs

Removing an individual from the negative influences around them allows them to focus on themselves, their treatment and making the necessary changes in behaviors. The serenity of the wilderness provides ample opportunity for reflection as to where they are, where they want to be and the level of personal investment to get there.

A unique therapeutic program for those suffering from a variety of emotional and behavioral concerns would combine traditional therapies with natural health and wellness. These therapies would include intense yet nurturing sessions enabling the therapists to recognized any underlying issues which may be contributing to poor behaviors.

Empowering individuals to overcome challenges during wilderness treks and adventures using skills and abilities they may not even have realized they had, will begin to prepare them to face the many obstacles of daily life. These individuals may even find themselves teaching and learning from others new methods of dealing with these same daily obstacles.

What You Need to Know About New Trends in Marijuana Use

Long Term Alcohol Rehab Treatment Program in the NW

“Dabbing,” a relatively new trend in marijuana use, has taken the drug to an extremely dangerous level. What has often been considered “the lesser of the drug evils,” marijuana use now has the potential for serious harm. A discussion with a teen or young adult about their use of marijuana must now not only include questions of whether an individual is using it, but also about how they are.

What is dabbing?

Known by the alternative names earwax, shatter, and honey oil, “dabbing” refers to butane hash oil, a marijuana extract that is almost pure THC. Butane hash oil (BHO) is made through a process of extraction in which marijuana is treated with butane, a solvent that extracts the THC compounds from the flower. Evaporating away the butane leaves only the resin, a viscous, amber-colored, waxy substance that resembles caramel or thick honey. What’s left over is a product that is 70-90% THC (average premium grade marijuana has approximately 10-25%). BHO is then vaporized, either in a pan or by using a dabbing pipe. A needle-like tool, or “dabber,” is used to grab the oil and apply it to whatever is being used to smoke it. Taking a “dab” results in a concentrated hit of extremely potent THC.

The extraction process used to make BHO is dangerous and deadly.

The process of butane extraction is not in itself dangerous nor unhealthy. In fact, butane extraction is a common technique used in the food industry to extract oil from peanuts and vitamins from vegetables, among other uses. However, teens and young adults attempting to make BHO typically use products that contain dangerous chemicals or solvents if ingested. Butane lighter fluid, a commonly used product, contains multiple chemicals that can be left behind in the process and consumed by the user.

Butane, propane, acetone, and other products used to extract THC concentrates are explosive and highly flammable. People who are already abusing drugs, and who have no technical knowledge often perform the process, which can be a deadly combination.

The health risks associated with cannabis use are amplified by “dabbing.”

What was once considered a relatively harmless drug, marijuana use now contributes to serious mental issues. Over time, psychoactive effects are the results of the severe impact on brain chemistry.

These negative impacts of BHO use include:

  • Severe agitation
  • Hallucinations
  • Respiratory problems
  • Severely impaired reaction time and motor skills
  • Psychosis and schizophrenia
  • Paranoia and panic
  • Heart palpitations
  • Intensified feelings of depression
  • Cognitive impairment

The common perception that marijuana is a safe, benign drug has to shift because of the new ways that people are finding to ingest it. THC levels are at the highest they have ever been in teens and young adults. Professionals in the field of chemical dependency and mental health are seeing a rise both the number of issues and the severity in teens and young adults who “dab.” It is important to be aware of the trends surrounding drug use, and to talk openly with adolescents about the realities of prolonged use. Open discussion and communication is key to preventing an individual from beginning down a very dangerous path.

Drug Abuse & Behavioral Problems: Choosing a Drug Abuse Treatment Plan

Rites of Passage Programs in Seattle

Prolonged drug abuse negatively alters both basic brain functioning and behavior patterns in children. Parents may begin to notice the gradual changes happening to their child but are often either misinformed or ill-equipped to manage the situation. Handling it properly involves: understanding how drug use reconfigures brain functioning, the ability to identify shifts in behavior associated with substance abuse and choosing a drug abuse treatment plan that can successfully address the problem.

The Brain and Drug Use

Sustained drug abuse alters important communication pathways in the brain and motivates the compulsive behavior that marks addiction. The brain is made up of many components that work in tandem to ensure proper functionality. The areas of the brain that are affected by drug abuse are the cortex, the limbic system and the brain stem.

  • The brain stem can be thought of as the basic control center—controlling heart rate, breathing and sleeping.
  • The limbic system is the reward circuit, regulating the ability to feel pleasure and the perception of emotions.
  • The cerebral cortex controls sensory function and is essentially the thinking center of the brain—powering the capacity to solve problems, plan and make decisions.

Communication occurs within a system of neurons—regulating everything a person thinks, feels and does. Because drugs are chemicals, they work in the brain by infiltrating the communication system and altering the way that information is processed. Drugs mimic the way that natural chemicals activate neurotransmitters by either inhibiting or over-releasing neurotransmitters in an abnormal way, modifying the communication system.

Drug abuse is a constant over stimulation of the brain’s reward system, producing an effect that generates an intense desire to repeat the behavior. Dopamine, a natural neurotransmitter associated with pleasure, is released at a rate 2 to 10 times that of a natural reward. The effects are immediate and substantial, and the brain learns to crave this.

The long-term health of the brain is compromised in the following ways:

  • Learning impairment
  • Inability to process emotion
  • Natural amounts of pleasure do not register
  • Feeling “lifeless”/“limp” /“numb”
  • Uncontrollable cravings
  • Compulsive behavior

Behavioral Issues Associated With Drug Dependency

Drug addiction also manifests in negative behavioral changes. Over time family and friends will see a marked difference in the way that the person who is abusing drugs engages in family, academic and social life.

Patterns of behavior that are cause for concern:

  • General unreliability
  • Tardiness
  • Stealing or other criminal behavior
  • Lying or omitting
  • Poor academic performance
  • Negative interactions within the home and family
  • Mood swing, violent impulses
  • Arguing in conversation
  • Change or withdrawal in social group
  • Disinterest in former activities, like sports or music
  • Change in eating habits

Behavior indicators can range from mild to the more extreme. When dealing with a chemical dependency, because the pathways in the brain have been altered it can be a vicious cycle, and a difficult one to break without proper intervention.

Breaking the Cycle

How much a person’s behavioral problem stem from drug abuse, and how much are a result of an intrinsic problem? This question cannot be answered until the drugs are completely removed from the system. For instance, an evaluation of whether a child suffers from a condition such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) cannot be reliably performed while chemical drugs are present in the system. This is because drug addiction and behavioral disorders such as ODD share many of the same symptoms.

To complicate matters even more, drug addiction erodes a person's self-control and ability to make sound decisions, and manipulates perceptions of values and priorities. As a result, they will fight against treatment, but in reality the person who is underneath the addiction wants help, but is suffering from a distorted sense of reality.

Wilderness Therapy is a complete removal from the environment where negative habitual thought and behavioral patterns persist. It is an effective treatment of both substance abuse problems and behavioral issues because it operates under a multi-dimensional model that includes both Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Wilderness therapy focuses on reconfiguring thought and behavior patterns in a positive direction that empowers the individual through self-realization and the learning of life skills.

Drug Abuse Treatment Programs and Identification

Programs for Troubled Young Adults

Labels are quick to be assigned today, and a child who is abusing drugs can get labelled with all sorts of mental health issues that he or she may not actually have. It can be easy to misdiagnosis a child or teen as the behavioral issues associated with drug dependency are symptoms found in many instances of mental illness. Drug abuse may lead a person to exhibit symptoms that are common to ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, oppositional defiant disorder and more—resulting in a misdiagnosis and prescription of medication. When the following symptoms are noticed, it is time to seek professional drug abuse treatment programs.

In combination, the following symptoms could be an indication of a number of different issues:

  • Fatigue
  • Mood swings
  • Poor academic performance
  • Social problems
  • Disengagement in extracurricular activities
  • Change in eating habits

A child may have been misusing drugs for multiple years before the symptoms arise, and when they do it is easy to read them as indicators for some other problem. Children who are suffering from bullying, abuse or stress may also display these behaviors in excess.

Taking medication reduces the symptoms, but it does not attempt to alter the conditions for positive change. The prescription of psychotropic drugs can also be dangerous during a child’s mental development.  By simply prescribing medicine and subduing the symptoms, it is easy to ignore what is really going on with the child. The only way to properly assess, diagnose and treat is to remove the drugs from the system completely for an extended period of time. In a wilderness therapy setting, participants go through a complete detox during the time of their stay. All chemicals are removed from the system, allowing them to become clean. In many cases, the symptoms that were associated with a mental illness lessen and even disappear completely.

Wilderness Therapy offers a different approach to managing behavioral problems and mental illness issues. A combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) in a natural setting, wilderness therapy re-programs harmful thought and behavior patterns by focusing on core values. The setting forces people to be self-reliant and self-aware under the treatment and supervision of therapists and program professionals. It also forces a reliance on group interaction. Drug abuse is a vicious cycle and wilderness therapy prepares a person for their aftercare by teaching them how to manage issues in a healthy and positive way.

Drug Rehab Treatment Clinic Alternative

Do Drug Rehab Clinics Actually Make Drugs Look ‘Cool?’

It is widely acknowledged that acceptance in peer groups is a powerful force during adolescence. These groups provide an important developmental point of reference through which adolescents gain insight into the world outside of their families. Peers are influential and inspiring—in both positive and negative directions. Success of the peer group approach in a rehabilitation setting depends on the context under which it is employed. Drug rehab clinics, while they seem effective, can have drawbacks as well.

Drawbacks of a Clinical Setting

One concern of a clinical rehab setting is that it surrounds addicts with other addicts.  In such a setting youth see their peers as other drug users. They can glamorize and validate the behaviour. There is a natural tendency to want to fit in and identify with peers—other addicts who share a similar experience. Upon completing a clinical program, most adolescents find themselves engaging in the same damaging activities. This is due to a combination of the peer dynamic reinforced in rehab as well as returning to familiar and destructive peer situations.

Advantages of Wilderness Therapy

The positive influences of peer dynamics in wilderness therapy are manifested in many ways. Under this approach, each person has a different issue and is thereby exposed to different challenges. What bonds participants is their accomplishment of challenging daily activities and their transition into self-reliant adulthood, not the problems that they each have.

An important part of a wilderness therapy program is the strategic conversation. Participants are only allowed to talk during group discussion or with their therapist/leader. Group discussion centers on predetermined topics that participants have had to reflect on during the day. This allows for honest and productive conversation that is not centered on someone’s problem. Instead, discussion will focus on self-realizations that everyone can learn from.

In some programs, once it is established a participant can be accountable to himself, he then becomes accountable to others as a peer mentor. A peer mentor is a positive contributor to the peer dynamic of wilderness therapy. Peer mentoring is exercised in varying degrees from behaviour modelling to direct peer interaction and involvement.

Approaching the peer-dynamic in this way results in the re-structuring of both thought and behaviour patterns that are likely to carry forward upon returning to a normal living situation. Those who complete the program make better choices, are less co-dependent and actively choose a positive path for themselves.
