Losing weight is exceedingly hard when you’re an adult. Starting a new diet and exercise program can be rough on anyone. For a teenager, losing weight can seem like an unreachable goal. Teens may be embarrassed to reach out for help, even to their parents, and may even be suffering from bullying at school. Here at Rites of Passage NW, we have a camp for overweight teenagers in North America – USA that help teens get the weight off – and keep it off, long after they leave our program.
We have many different components to our programs here at Rites of Passage NW, and think of ourselves as slightly different than a traditional “fat camp.” Our first concentration is on diet. Here, teens will eat a completely holistic diet with many fruits and vegetables. It may take a bit of getting used to for teens, but it is well worth it once they see the results.
Exercise is also a big part of our program. We try to focus away from boring exercise, such as running on the treadmill or going to the gym. We feature wilderness treks and hikes that are wonderful for teens. We teach that exercise is fun and rewarding. Teens will even learn survival skills by making and keeping camp.
Teens will also participate in group and individual counseling while here at our program. We want to treat co-occurring disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as get to the root of the problem.
