It is never easy to be obese or overweight, but for a teenager, it may be crippling. Overweight teenagers may be dealing with bullies or harassment at school, or experiencing other social problems. Obese kids may also be dealing with issues such as anxiety, depression, or even substance abuse. Unfortunately, kids may often feel embarrassed, not able to turn to their friends and family for help, or even to professionals. However, there is hope – here at Rites of Passage NW we have a camp for overweight kids in North America – USA that can help overweight teens get the weight off, and keep it off long after our program.
As an actual working ranch, our kids here learn about how to fully operate a ranch. This not only contributes to their structure during their time here, but they also learn how to cook and grow their own food. Our teens here learn how to cultivate, harvest, and cook all of their own food, and eat a completely holistic diet while here at Rites of Passage NW. It may take some getting used to, but everyone loves the end result.
Exercise and therapy are both also large parts of our program, and we integrate them with each other. In addition to conventional therapy such as group and individual sessions, we also introduce wilderness therapy, equine therapy, and rites of passage therapy, so that teens get a wide array of experiences. Nature experiences comprise much of the teens ‘ exercise, as they hike, trek, and learn survival skills in the nearby Olympic Mountains.
